Pepsi Citi
Citi Field looks hideous from the Whitestone Expressway, but of course that’s because you’re looking at its backside. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with backsides, per se, but this one is not pretty. To be fair, it does look much better from the front and it is absolutely amazin’ inside — at least based on the way it looks on television.
Except for one thing: The billboards. It just seems kind of strange to go to all the trouble of building a new stadium so that it looks like an old stadium (i.e., Ebbets Field), only to erode the effect by plastering it with a bunch of 21st century logos. The lone exception to this disconnect, surprisingly, is Pepsi.
Pepsi reckoned that if the new Mets ballpark were to evoke a vintage ballpark, then it should put up a vintage, swirly-red Pepsi-Cola logo. It’s very cool. But it is surprising because Pepsi recently rolled out a new, ultra-modern logo that looks suspiciously like Obama’s. They did tack the new logo atop the old one, but all in all I think Pepsi got it right at Citi Field. What do you think?
